SOLAR PANELS CAN WITHSTAND HAILSTORMS
Solar panels covered with an acrylic coating can withstand the onslaught of 2-inch wide hail. This statistic comes from a study conducted by Arizona State University, one of the top solar panel testing sites in the world. The same study subjected solar panels to many different projectiles, many of which produced similar results to 2-inch wide hail stones.
According to solar specialist Rich Hessler, even if hail falls onto the panel, the panel can still work fine. While the glass may crack, if the panel itself is not punctured, then it can still generate electricity. Anyone with a cracked panel will need to get it fixed, but your energy output should not be affected tremendously while you wait for repairs.
Many solar panels are also installed on a tilt instead of parallel with the ground. This might sound like a tiny detail but, if the panel were parallel with the ground, then a hailstone could cause a greater impact than if it hit a tilted surface and fracture the entire panel. Since most panels are installed on a tilt, the force that a hailstone creates on impact can be deflected greatly.
SOLAR PANELS ARE RATED TO HOLD AGAINST HURRICANES
Many solar panels can withstand wind speeds of over 150 miles per hour. Some solar panels are rated to survive wind speeds as high as 245 miles per hour.
Don’t worry about tree limbs hitting your solar panels. If your solar panels are properly installed, they should not be close to any trees. Installers know that trees would block a good portion of solar power trying to get into the panels. They will make sure your panels are directly exposed to sunlight.
DOES INSURANCE COVER MY SOLAR PANELS?
Talk with your insurance provider to see if your solar panels are covered for weather disasters. Many solar panel issues that arise due to adverse weather could be covered either by insurance or a manufacturer’s warranty. Also, make sure that your panels are regularly maintained through washing and general care.
Texas has to deal with random weather patterns. A beautiful day can change to something dreadful at the drop of a hat. If you are relying on solar panel technology, you need your panels to work no matter what the weather.
